Loren Everett Meyer of Mona, Iowa, died October 25, at age 92. His beloved wife of 66 years, Margaret, preceded him in death by three years. His relatives, friends, neighbors, and colleagues agree: Loren was an exceptional person, one who loved much and was much loved.

Loren was the first of four children, born September 5, 1929, to Herbert and Willetta (Hanson) Meyer. The family lived in Austin, Minnesota, where Loren attended public school and church at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Much of his boyhood was spent on farms in Nevada Township, Mower County, working with and for his Hanson uncles.

In high school, Loren was employed as a bellhop at the Fox Hotel in Austin and at Fenton Dental Laboratory. In his late teen years, he was scoutmaster for an Austin scout troop. Within days of graduation, he began working at the Hormel plant. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

Loren married Margaret Ann Fossey, June 7, 1952, at Mona Lutheran Church. The newlyweds lived in Newport News, Virginia, while Loren was stationed at nearby Fort Eustis. He was honorably discharged in March, 1953; their first child, a daughter, was born within weeks. The threesome moved back to the Midwest and Loren returned to work at Hormel's.

Soon, Loren and Margaret purchased a 40-acre farm near Mona in a rural community known as "Poor Creek" where they resided for the rest of their lives. Their original house was modest, but the couple realized it was terrific place to raise a family. They had five more children, all sons, in the next nine years. Having outgrown their small home, Loren and Margaret built a new house on the property in 1964.

Loren retired from Hormel's in June, 1991, beginning a thirty-year retirement he often called the best years of his life. He enjoyed fishing, traveling via motor home, playing pool, helping his children, and enjoying his grandkids. He volunteered countless hours at Mona Lutheran Church, at nearby Pleasant Hill Cemetery, and helping neighbors, relatives, and friends.

He was engaged in his community, serving on the Mona School Board, the Lyle Rural Fire Board, the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Board, and as a Township Trustee. For several decades, Loren participated in mission trips to help build churches in Oaxaca, Mexico, and persuaded others to travel along and provide financial support for these endeavors.

Loren was friendly and kindhearted, helpful and handy, generous and wise. His memorial service will be held Saturday, November 20, 1:30PM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 103 Pershing Avenue, Lyle, Minnesota, the Rev. Scott Meyer officiating. Immediate survivors include his six children – Sue Horgen, and Kurt (Paula), Mark (Ann), Rod (Kendall), Lowell (Margaret), and Scott (Tracy) Meyer, plus numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His family will share memories and greet Loren's friends at the Church prior to the service beginning at noon.
