October 14, 1930 - October 8, 2022
Inez Jennette Hommez passed away on Saturday, October 8th, 2022 surrounded by family. She was born at home on a farm near Carpenter, IA on October 14, 1930 to Carl and Nettie (Halvorson) Stromley. She attended country school up to 8th grade. She married Francis “Gizz” Hommez on December 28, 1955. They made their home southwest of Stacyville and farmed crops and livestock for 54 years before retiring in 2008. In her younger years she worked at a cafe, a housekeeper at the hospital and also at Fox River Mills, all in Osage, IA. Once married she wore many hats as a farm wife and “Chief Family Manager”. She kept books for the farm, right down to the penny every month, and was known lovingly as “The Banker” on the farm. She also took the saying “cleanliness is next to Godliness” to a whole new level. She kept a spotless home and building site, even the garage was no match for her cleaning skill. The building site was mowed meticulously every Wednesday and weeds would jump right out of the ground when they saw her coming for them. She did all of this while still caring for and loving her family. She was an avid seamstress and made many clothes for her children over the years. She crafted the most delicious desserts and each holiday enjoyed surprising her family with her creations. Each of her children knew of her deep love for them and how proud she was of each one. She loved to watch any Hawkeye sports with “Gizz” and enjoyed watching her grand children and great grandchildren grow up and excel in their specific sports and in their life endeavors. Most recently, it gave her great pleasure to receive photos or drawings they had made and she lovingly hung them around her home. Inez spent the last four years at Apple Valley Assisted Living. She loved her home there and the people who cared for her each day. She exclaimed at every visit how much she loved it and the way they “cook for her, clean for her, and do her laundry”. After so many years of caring for others she definitely deserved the pampering they gave to her. Inez is survived by two daughers, Sandra Eberling (Roger) of St. Ansgar, Beckie Countryman (Tony) of Tipton, one son, Mark Hommez (Angie) of St. Ansgar, a son in law, Paul Martin of Cedar Rapids; four grandchilden, Jason Eberling (Marjorie), Kristin Linnell (Justin), Kerra Martin, and Matt Lukemyres (fiancee Sam Koehn); four great grandchildren, Mikaela and Jacob Eberling, Hunter and Cohen Linnell; and many nieces and nephews, four sisters; Mary Jane Rieman, Lillian Warrington, Betty Tollefson, and Diane (Victory) Petznick. She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis “Gizz” Hommez, daughter Debra Martin of Cedar Rapids, parents Carl and Nettie Stromley; three brothers, Orville Stromley, Carl Jr Stomley, and Kenneth Stromley; six sisters, Loretta Hoffland, Ruth Patterson, Louise McPhail, infant Mary Jane Stomley, Rose Riekow, and Gladys Groth. She will be remembered most for her love for her family, her skill at mowing and cleaning, all sweets; especially chocolate and sugar cookies. She will also be remembered for the way she sewed her children’s clothing when they were younger and how she was able to mend any hole. There will never be a way to mend the hole in our hearts that is left by her passing, though we are all so grateful to have been touched by her love for us.
