Barbara Thome, the daughter of Leo and Stella (Heimermann) Smith was born on December 21, 1938. She grew up on the family farm, attended country school and graduated from high school in Stacyville, Iowa. She married Norbie Thome on May 30, 1960. After a brief move to Mason City, they moved back to Stacyville and purchased Wolf’s Grocery Store. Barb spent the majority of her life serving her community through the store. Delivering groceries to shut-ins, Visitation School, the Nursing Home, Legion, Brat Daze and many more, she was always there ready to help out where needed. Barb also served by being a board member on a variety of community organizations. In Barbs limited spare time, and when able, she did enjoy her flower and vegetable gardens, fishing with her family, an occasional trip somewhere and even trying her luck at a slot machine. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family which also included her “store” family. There was never a time she was too busy to visit with you if you walked into her grocery store. Barb was a special person and respected by all. She will be remembered for her strong work ethic and sense of family and community. All who knew her held her in the highest regard. She is survived by her: children, Lisa (Al) Groth, Sheila (Brian) Kittleson, Kim (Steve) Bruggeman; grandchildren, Ashley (Adam) Mitchell, Matt (Morgan) Kittleson, Chelsea Groth, Megan (Connor) Drew, Travis Bruggeman, Anna (Greg) Whiteoak and Jack Bruggeman; 7 great-grandchildren; siblings, Marilyn Lermon, Dan (Sharon) Smith and special family friend Jeff Adams. Barb was preceded in death by her: husband, Norbie; grandsons, Sam and Adam Bruggeman; her parents Leo and Stella Smith; sister Marian Anderson; brothers-in-law, Bob Lermon and Art Anderson.

I’m sorry to hear of Barbs passing. Such a wonderful woman. My earliest memories of Barb was in our rural 4-H club, the Shooting Stars. I was so young and really looked up to Barb and her sister Marion as role models.

My condolences to the whole family. She played such a big role when it comes to my memories as a child visiting Stacyville and going to the Store for my Grandparents!
