September 10, 1933 - December 22, 2022
Betty Ellen Suchy was born September 10,1933 at Mt. Pleasant, IA to Earl Francis Leeper and Bonnie Ellen (Giberson) Leeper. She passed away peacefully at Faith Lutheran Home at the age of 89 on December 22, 2022. Services will be held January 14, 2023, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church at 1 PM. Fellowship will follow the service. She grew up on a small farm by Rock Falls, IA with her younger sister and brother. She married Gary Burton Torgeson in 1949 and to this union two daughters were born, Jacqueline Lee and Jean Marie. They divorced in 1966. She worked at the Mitchell County Hospital in the office and as an Aide from 1958-1970. After graduating from the NIACC Nursing Program she became an LPN. She then worked in the operating room for 19 years total with 3 1/2 years at the Charles City hospital. She made lifelong friends in her field and enjoyed her job. Retirement came January 17, 1997. On February 14, 1980, she married Allan John Suchy. That year they moved to Mound View Farm which would later become a Century Farm. She was a good willing helper and partner. Besides farming they began raising hogs and later established a trucking business. With the help of Rickey Flugge since the mid 1980's it all worked out. He was like a son to them. Betty had many talents such as being an excellent seamstress and an avid baker. She had a magic touch with pie crust and divinity. Another favorite was playing Bridge. The girls had monthly meetings for card playing and party time. Lots of laughter in the house those nights! And she enjoyed Scrabble and was very hard to beat. Also need to mention her compassion for kids, cats and dogs. They all loved her. She was known for deeply caring for her friends and helping, cooking, cleaning and checking on them when in need. She drove them to Dr appointments or in later years would visit them in the nursing home. Betty was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, and she was a VFW Auxiliary member. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and husband Allan in 2021. She is survived by her daughters; Jackie Porter and Jean Canny; brother Earl Leeper Jr; three grandsons, Carl (Julie) Valasek, Chad Valasek, Lance (Julie) Canny; three great grandsons, Justin Canny, Nathan Canny, Austin Valasek; one great great granddaughter, Audrey Canny; sister-in-laws, Ann Gerriets, Terry Beavers and many nieces and nephews. She had a very fulfilling life and will be missed by many. Rest in Peace. We want to thank the staff at Faith Home and Hospice of North IA for their excellent care.
