Donald Paul Pangburn

December 30, 1955 - May 3, 2024

Donald “Donnie” Paul Pangburn, age 68, of Northwood, Iowa, passed away Friday, May 3, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. Donald was born to Milo “Buck” and Beverly (Hicks) Pangburn on December 30, 1955, in Albert Lea, Minnesota. He was raised in Northwood, IA and graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School, where he was a great athlete and made it to State in his junior year for wrestling. He later graduated from NIACC with an associate degree in farm management. Donnie and Bryn Bestul rekindled their young love and became partners in all their future ventures together. They were married on December 29, 1984, at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. Donnie was a giver and a worker. Throughout his life he gave all he had to many jobs and ventures, including farming with his parents, and using his genealogy to breed pigs and cattle as their family had clients from all over the world that would come in. Donnie also worked with Custom Swathing of Hay and Custom AI for cattle. Together with his wife, they managed several businesses, including DP’s Lounge from 1984-1989, Northstar Car and Truck Wash for 30 years, Kraft Foods in Mason City, Northstar Corn Maze for 10 years, Northstar Xpress for 8.5 years, and Northstar Garden Center for 13 years. Currently, he was running Red Boar Ridge Vacation Rentals with his daughter, Paige. Donnie was also a school bus driver and sub for the Northwood-Kensett School District for 35 years. Aside from his extensive work history, his giving spirit found time to serve on the Northwood Country Club Board, Northwood-Kensett School Board, and as a dedicated 4-H leader for many years. Donnie was also a member of the Aristicrats Car Club where he enjoyed showing his 1948 Anglia and his Dodge A100. He could fix anything and was a self-taught mechanic from an early age. This led to a career in dirt track racing starting in 1986, when he was named the IMCA rookie of the year. He made countless friends as he traveled around to local tracks racing sprint cars and modifieds. Donnie found great joy in the time spent with his family, particularly in mentoring his children and numerous area children in showing pigs and cattle, which was a great bonding experience with his children. “Well, I got that green light baby I got to keep moving on.” – Lynard Skynard Donnie is survived by his wife, Bryn Pangburn; children, Dr. Nigel (Lindsay) Millard and their children, Cael, Asher and Halle, Grayson Pangburn, Paige (Kevin) McClure, Peyton Pangburn; cousins, Suzie Pangburn, Jim Steiman and many aunts, uncles, relatives, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and his cousin Gary Pangburn. As a true giver he donated his body for research to help someone out he may have never known. The family will be planning a Celebration of Life at a later time. Details will be updated as they are planned. Schroeder-Hoff Funeral Homes, Northwood are assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials and cards may be sent to the funeral home at P.O. Box 164, Northwood, IA 50459. “Well, now they call me the breeze I keep blowing down the road Well, now they call me the breeze I keep blowing down the road I ain't got me nobody I don't carry me no load Ooh-ooh Mr. Breeze” -Lynard Skynard

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bryn and the family. Donnie was a great friend to our family and also has been a blessing to my mom Betty since dad passed away in 2018 as he has rented the tillable acreage around her house and done a fine job of being a steward of the land among all of the other ventures he has had going on. Donnie was my 4-H leader when I started the program at 9 years old. I restored his F-14 Farmall from the engine being a box of parts we cleaned out of the garage at Buck and Bev's place with the frame of the tractor in the tree line across the driveway when I was about 14 years old as a last minute 4-H project and was able to take it to the state fair as the first of 4 such projects over the next 4 years. An example of how his influence as a 4-H leader extended beyond the livestock show ring. I enjoyed following his racing during the years he raced as much for his willingness to try new things (V6 engines etc.) with his modified as for the successes he found doing it. As a race fan those can be just as impressive as the wins. He was a great neighbor to our family and an important member of the community who will be deeply missed. He worked hard and is now resting having given all he had to make the Northwood community and Worth county a better place to live and work. Donnie, you will be missed!

Donnie Pangburn Donnie, you were such an inspiration to Brian, me and our kids. It was an honor to have had you in our lives. You have left us with so many wonderful memories of you, a man we truly admired. You had a deep love and devotion for your wife Bryn that was so apparent in the way you laughed and joked with her, complimented her, and experienced life’s ups and downs together. You were a loving father to four wonderful children: Peyton, Paige, Grayson and Nigel. Brian and I were always so impressed with how you shared your love of farming and animals with them: taking them to 4-H Fairs, helping them to raise and prepare their animals for exhibition and sale, accompanying them to riding lessons, and teaching them to use farm equipment. You and Bryn taught them so many important life lessons, and that shows in the productive, caring, and giving individuals that they have become. You supported your community if anyone needed help: your school district as a school board member and bus driver, your local 4-H as a board member and fair supporter, and your city as a business owner. If someone in the community needed an extra hand, you were there for them. You were devoted to your mom, dad and other family members. You nursed your parents as their health declined instead of leaving that responsibility for someone else. Additionally, you supported the family cattle and pig business, as well as maintained the family farmland and equipment. You could fix almost anything on the farm and at the Kraft Foods assembly line. And still you found time for racing and family. We were always in awe of your energy, devotion to family and positivity! We will always remember our family holidays together: sharing delicious food, discussing family traditions, telling stories, hearing about Ike’s escapades, playing games, and bragging about our kids. In the end despite your best efforts, your body would not heal, and God called you Home. You will truly be missed, Donnie, but we are content that you are now without pain and are with God and with your loved ones who preceded you. May you rest in peace. Love always, The Bestuls: Brian, Suzie, Kylie, Daniel and families
