Gloria Mae (Hanson) Moss was born in Osage, IA on September 23, 1958 - her Aunt Darlene's 17th birthday. She was the first born to Wayne and Mavis Hanson of Mona, IA and the first grandchild of Carl and Thelma Hanson of Northwood, IA and Millie Carlson of Mona, IA. When she was 2 years old, she relunctantly welcomed her brother Paul to the family. At 6 years old, she welcomed sister, Wanda and at 12 years old another sister Beth which she received a rotten apple in the head angrily thrown by her brother since it was "another girl." She responded by saying "it isn't my fault". She hopskotched her way through the small town schools of Otranto, Carpenter and Grafton and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1977. Her love of crafting, baking, canning, and sewing started early and were nurtured through her membership of the Mona Merry Makers 4H club. But her baked creations didn't always turn out the way they were supposed to like the infamous batch of "brick bread" - a loaf of very heavy toe breaking bread. A recipe that her siblings never let her forget. Her sewing projects often consisted of late nights and even last stitches being sewn in the car on the way to the Mitchell County Fair. She graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City, IA in 1979 with an A.A. degree which led her to different jobs and homes in Mason City, Eagle Grove, Goldfield, and Ankeny, IA. When she wasn't at work, she enjoyed disco dancing with friends. From Iowa she moved to Casa Grande, AZ and on January 1, 1988 she was united in marriage to Glen Moss in Las Vegas, Nevada. A so-called elopement that the family knew about. A year later they welcomed their son Alan and then that spring she moved her little family back to Iowa. They bought a fixer upper in St. Ansgar and worked for many years as a loan officer at Farmer's State Bank. She kept busy going to Alan's school activities and helping Glen with his wood furniture business. In 2009, new adventures sent them to Omaha, NE and Lakewood and Colorado Spring, CO where she last worked at Peterson Air Force Base in the Breaktime Convenient Store. Her qualities of loyalty and customer service proved to be a wonderful asset for both her boss and their customers. In 2019, they circled back to St. Ansgar and her smiling face could be seen at the Food Center grocery store and at the Senior Center making and serving meals. During all her years in Iowa she was an active member of Mona Lutheran Church. In June she was diagnosed with cancer. Her mind was determined to fight it, but unfortunately her body was not. She passed away at Stacyville Nursing Home in the early hours of Thursday, August 29, 2024 surrounded by her family. She is preceded in death by her mom Mavis Hanson; parents-in-law Bill and Margie Moss; nephew Alex Hanson; grandparents Carl and Thelma Hanson and Gilbert and Millie Carlson; uncles Craig Hanson and Harvey Hanson, aunts Marilyn Hanson and Ila Hanson; cousin Kathryn (Hanson) Mills; and dog Pebbles. Gloria is survived by husband Glen Moss and son Alan Moss of St. Ansgar, IA; father Wayne Hanson of Northwood, IA; siblings Paul (Terri) Hanson of Wanamingo, MN; Wanda Hanson of Mona, IA; Beth (Kenneth) Steinhovden of Florø, Norway; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-laws Larry (Valerie) Moss of Lakewood, CO; Nancy (Dave) Fisher of Wheat Ridge, CO; nephews Blake (Jen) Hanson of Kenyon, MN; Mike (Holly) Moss of Lakewood, CO; Trevor (Shelby) Fisher of Lincoln, NE; neices Jen Hanson of Cannon Falls, MN; Nichole (David) Petrie of Lakewood, CO; Hanah (Dustin) Conley of Decono, CO; aunts, uncles, great neices and nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends. Gloria inherited her Mom's sweet tooth and unfortunately her Dad's singing voice. Her family won't forget her extremely weak coffee, sticking out her tongue when she was teased, and wearing t-shirts with various sayings like "My brain is giving me the silent treatment today" or "I wonder if lefse thinks about me too?" Funeral services will be held at Mona Lutheran Church on September 17th with visitation from 1-2pm and service at 2.30pm Champion Funeral Home of Osage is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.schroederfuneralhomes.com.
