February 13, 1930 - November 4, 2024
Donald Roy Heuton age 94 currently of Osage went to his heavenly home November 4, 2024. Don was born February 13, 1930, to Roy and Marcella (Peters) Heuton in Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized March 16, 1930, and confirmed May 28, 1944, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll, Iowa. Don graduated from Carroll high school in 1948. Don grew up on a farm near Carroll, Iowa and spent his time helping on the farm and hunting. He met Frances Kester from Audubon, Iowa and the two married May 14, 1949. The couple left Iowa to move to California, and made a stop in Green River, Wyoming and stayed for 15 years. While in Green River he was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad, then a boiler operator at FMC. In his free time, he would help on the Spear C Ranch. The couple finally made it to California in 1966 where he owned a gun store and did home repairs. Don also served as a reserve police officer. In 1992 he retired, and the couple moved to Payson Arizona. During his life, Don was a founding member of two Lutheran churches in Wyoming and Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church in Payson, Arizona. He enjoyed making and shooting black powder guns, building furniture for family and friends, participating in mountain man rendezvous, and also in reenactments. He was a participant alongside Charlton Heston, in the first reenactment of the retreat of the Scots from the battle of Culloden in Scotland, and in the 150th anniversary of the Alamo battle reenactment. Don and Frances returned to Iowa in 2001 first to Mount Pleasant then to Osage. He is survived by his two children, son Ron and Wendy (Hook) Saint Ansgar, Iowa and daughter, Terri and Rick Barr of Sellersburg, Indiana. Six grandchildren, Jason (Kelly) Heuton of Surprise, AZ, Johnnie Lee Hollingsworth of Osage, IA, Desiree Hollingsworth of Pueblo, CO, Mark Barr of Elkhart, IN, Josh (Sarah) Barr of Foley, AL, Lindsey Barr of Louisville, KY; 10 great grandchildren, Dustin, Luke, Taylor, Tina, Jasmine, Nehemiah, Elijah, Alex, Zach, Lilly, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded by his parents, wife Frances, and two infant children, Greg and Julie, brother Jack (Bev) Heuton of Altoona, IA; sister, Carol Ann (Jerry) Lass of Decorah, IA. We will miss his stories of his adventures, people he met, and the places he went. A celebration of life will be held at First Lutheran Church in Saint Ansgar, Iowa on December 7, 2024, at 11 AM with a visitation one hour before the service in the parish center. The family would like to thank Dr. Ben Hargens, St. Croix hospice and the comfort care unit at Mitchell County Regional Health Center. A special thanks to Pastor Chris Staley for his many visits to Don and staying with him to the end. Starting new congregations and helping with the construction of the church was important to Don, so the family would like memorials directed to First Grace Lutheran of Osage for their building fund.
